Money Is Low Priority in Parent-Child Talks

Today’s parents may be willing to talk to their children about subjects like healthy eating, the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and the importance of good grades and good manners, but the topic lowest on their radar, according to a national telephone survey conducted for the American Institute of CPAs by Harris Interactive, is good money management strategies.   Even in today’s dire economic environment, the study found money is among the lowest priorities in conversations between parents and their children.   According to the survey, parents are more likely to have talked with their children about:   Talking about the value of money and managing it wisely came in sixth, at 81 percent.   Ch Read full article…

Weekly claims for unemployment…

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — First-time claims for unemployment insurance in Louisiana for the week ending Aug. 11, decreased from the previous week’s total.

The state labor department figures released Friday show the initial claims decreased to 2,814 from the previous week’s total of 3,216. For the comparable week a year earlier, there were 3,791initial claims.

The four-week moving average, which is a less volatile measure of claims, decreased to 3,025 from the previous week’s total of 3,240.

Continued unemployment claims claimed for the week ending Aug. 11 totaled 36,001, compared to 36,452 the previous week. T

First-Ever Financial Planning Handbook

The Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. announced July 10, 2012, that John Wiley & Sons, Inc. will publish a first-of-its-kind competency handbook for financial planning. 

  This new handbook, which is expected to be published in March 2013, will feature approximately ninety chapters that have implications for practitioners, educators, and students interested in becoming personal financial planners.
