Staying Positive When Your Career Goes South
One of the important aspects of good career management is making sure that you’re mentally strong and clear-headed. While work can get you down for a variety of reasons – even if you’re unemployed and don’t have a job, work can still get you down if you’re stressing over not having a job. Been there, done that myself. – you need to ensure that you keep your head clear and stay positive when times that are tough. It’s probably especially true to keep positive during the tough times although that’s normally easier said than done.
I recall once when I was going through a tough time in my work life shortly after a layoff, I visited my doctor and spoke with her regarding my situation and how I was feeling very down on myself as a result of the job loss. One of the first things she asked was how much exercise I was getting. At the time, the answer was none. I’d fallen off the wagon so to speak and was no longer going to the gym. She suggested I needed to get back on the wagon and get at least 30 minutes per day of some sort of exercise and that I’d feel better – physically and emotionally – as a result. She was right.
Part of remaining mentally healthy relates to keeping physically healthy. Even doing some exercise 30 minutes per day can help keep your head on straight and keep you in a positive mood. Whether it’s working out, going for a walk, riding your bike or doing some other form of exercise, it’s a great way to keep fit both mentally and physically. It also tends to be a great way to meet people too whether for personal or business reasons. One of the things that I’ve been guilty of in my life is spending too much time isolating myself from others working online and not connecting with enough people face to face. This can have a big (negative) impact on mental health and can help get you down.
If work is getting you down and exercise or some form of daily physical exercise isn’t currently a part of your routine, you should strongly consider making it such. Join a gym, go walking every day or night for 30 minutes, pick up a new sport, go jogging. There are plenty of ways to get your heart rate up a bit and pick up your spirits at the same time.
